About Makkon 2019

Makkon (マッコン) is an event of anime, manga, and Japanese culture. Its name comes from the japan word matsuri (祭り), which means festival and the English word convention.

The event is held annually in December. Alcohol isn't allowed for we wish to prove that we can have fun without it.

Makkon allows the opportunity to attend many activities and lectures. Visitors can try Dance Dance Revolution and video games. Lectures include educational insights, presentations, performances, and competitions. Never-changing are the workshops for drawing, origami, and the reading corner. Also, there are always plenty of nerdy of shops to visit on Makkon.

Notice to all that come with car: parking is in front of a ramp on the beggining of the road towards FKKT and FRI. If the parking is full, there is another parking accross the road of the parking space of the Zoo.

FAQ

The event will take place within the Faculty of Computer and Information Science and Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (Večna pot 113, 1000 Ljubljana). It stands across the Ljubljana Zoo. It is possible to drive there by car or bus (numbers 14 and 18).

Cosplay is very much wanted. You can arrive already in it, or put it on at the event.

The changing room can be found next to cafeteria on the third floor. We don’t take responsibility for your items. If you’re changing in the bathroom, we ask for you to clean after yourself.

We never say no to volunteers. We need them on friday (for setting up the place), on saturday (for the event), but we also need them on sunday (for cleaning up). If you are interested, contact us on mail makkon.festival@gmail.com titled VOLUNTEER.

You can become a member on the event. Find Info Spot that is usually right by the entrance.

Taking photos of the crowd is allowed. But if you wish to take pictures with a single person, or a cosplay, please ask them for consent.

Cosplay competition is not yet open to apply!

Alcohol and drugs are forbidden on Makkon. You are also not allowed to enter the premises under influence. Makkon is also child-friendly space, therefore we must set a good example. For more, please refer to the rulebook.

Weapons and dangerous objects are forbidden on Makkon. Dangerous objects are also lasers and loud sound effects. What is allowed are unsharpened and non-functional replicas that have to be clearly shown with the silver tape and examined by Info Spot as soon as you enter the event.

The entry fee for Makkon is as always free. If you want to contribute to event, you are welcome to donate some money on the event itself.

Code of conduct for Makkon festival

  • What is illegal outside of Makkon event, is also illegal on the premises of the event. Fighting, harassing and similar actions won’t be tolerated.
  • Entry to intoxicated people will be denied.
  • Intoxication and drugs are not allowed on the premises of Makkon festival. If you disregard this rule, you will be removed from the event. If you are found providing or using alcohol and drugs, you will be reported and removed.
  • Food consumption is allowed only at specified areas (Maid & Butler cafe, cafeteria).
  • Do not touch the equipment (technical or exhibitions) during the festival. Staff is available for all questions regarding exhibitions or equipment during the event.
  • Respect the furnishings and spaces of the Faculty, Makkon Association and all participating parties. Rooms with allowed entry are visibly labeled so. It is forbidden to vandalize the place in any way. It is also forbidden to enter the spaces that are not a part of the festival (balconies, other classrooms). Persons found in such places will be removed from the premises. Persons vandalising the space will be financially charged for any damage.
  • Real weapons (functional or non-functional) are forbidden. Visibly labeled replicas are allowed. Organizers demand the right to remove any weapons deemed dangerous during the festival. Their decision is final.
  • To take pictures of or with cosplayers, ask for permission. You can take pictures of the crowd without any question.
  • Makkon staff will be recognizable by the visible tags upon their person. Personnel shouldn’t be harassed or bothered with non-serious questions. Allow them to pass you to reach their destination. Being deliberately in their way for a longer period of time will be considered as harassment.
  • It is imperative that you follow the rules of Makkon team and Faculty personnel. This is obligatory for any participant of Makkon festival.
  • Disregarding the rules will be met by removing the person from the premises of Makkon festival.

Artist definition::


The following is a categorization of an artist on Makkon event:
  • An artist is a person or a group of them that create their own original content.
  • Art includes pictures/graphics/clothes/accessories/etc. done by the artist’s handywork.
  • Art style can be inspired by the already existing ones, but it has to hold its own uniqueness in a way that is as such easily recognizable by the casual observer. We do not merely copy the artists we love.
  • The artist can reference original characters from series/games/movies/etc., but mustn't copy them in a way that they are unrecognizable from the original.

Selling art:


Before art can be sold on Makkon event, the artist must first be approved as such, according to the artist definition (above). To gain a selling space one must step into contact with the Makkon team organization over email makkon.festival@gmail.com - the selling space is limited.

Following the law, all sellers must be able to present a bill of sale. Therefore they must be officially applied as a seller at their local Slovenian administrative office.

Basic:


The Cosplay competition is held in the larger lecture hall on the Makkon 2019 convention in the area of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (lecture hall P1). The competition is held in a round, where both the cos (costume) and play (act) are judged. The act should not be longer than 2 min.

The contestants are not part of the Makkon organisation team, but people who are renowned for their knowledge and experience in the field of cosplay.

The costume for the competition must originate from:

  • manga or comics,
  • anime or cartoons,
  • video games,
  • series or movies,
  • books,
  • AUs (Alternative Universes), that stem from the above categories,
  • crossovers of the above categories,
  • OC*

*OC characters cannot winthe competition, since the judges don't have a basis on which to judge similarity to the character.


Application:


Application for Cosplay competitions is not yet possible.


Process:


At the begining, the contestants gather in lecture hall P1, on the left side (from the perspective of the hall entrance).

When the host calls you up, stand in the middle of the stage and wait for silence. Then, perform your act. After your act, wait on the stage for questions posed by the judges and possibly photographs. Before leaving the stage towards the left side, we suggest you take your best bow.

After all the contestants are finished with their acts, a procession will be held for the people in costume without prepared acts ("costume ShowCase").


Grading:


The judges look for the following:

  • complexity of the costume,
  • quality of production,
  • work put into the costume,
  • performance,
  • similarity to the character.

The winners are the three highest graded cosplayers. The prizes are the same for groups, as well as individuals. The decision of the judges is final and cannot be negotiated.


Rules:


  • To participate, an application must be sent in for the Cosplay competition, which can be done by filling the form above. Applications are possible until all the spaces are filled, or until 07.12.2019 by 12.00 (noon). If the spaces are not filled by the day of the event, applications will be possible at the INFO-point until 15.00 (3.00 pm) on the event.
  • The costume for the competition must be at least 30% handmade. The parts that are handmade must be described in the form. If the information is false, the competitor will be disqualified from the Cosplay competition.
  • A reference picture of the represented character is needed for participation in the Cosplay competition.
  • The order of the performances are in the order of applications. If the contestant misses the performance, they have the option to present after all the other contestants have finished.
  • Inappropriate stripping and nudity is prohibited during the time of festival Makkon; the Cosplay competition isn't an exception to this rule.
  • Vulgar behaviour, explicitly erotic themes and hate speeches are not allowed. If you wouldn't want to perform your act in front of a grandmother and her friends, you should think about the contents of it.
  • Littering on the stage is not allowed: spilling water or other liquids on the stage, tossing glitter and confetti... What the contestant brings to the stage is also taken off the stage by the contestant.
  • Strictly forbidden is the use of flammable substances (fireworks, rockets, matches, flint, etc). This applies to the entire area of festival Makkon.
  • It is not allowed to present under the influence of drugs or other intoxicating substances.
  • Using animals on stage, dead or alive, is not allowed.
  • Throwing objects at the audience or judges is not allowed.

Applications for the Cosplay competition made by the judges or the members of the Organisation team of the Makkon society will be rejected. Members of the Makkon society are allowed to compete in the Cosplay competition.

If the contestant destroys or damages the equipment, the contestant has to pay for repairs or replacement equipment. The Makkon society holds the right to change the rules and program.
